About the Nagoya Station Camera
This camera looks over Nagoya Station, the transport heart of central Japan and the largest railway station building in the country by floor area. Locals call the district around it Meieki, and it functions as a city in its own right rather than simply a place to change trains.
Six operators meet here. JR Central runs the Tokaido Shinkansen and the conventional lines, and Meitetsu, Kintetsu, the Higashiyama and Sakura-dori subway lines and the Aonami Line all have their own concourses beneath or beside the JR building. Above it all rise the JR Central Towers, with Midland Square and JR Gate Tower filling out the skyline in shot.
The rhythm of the frame is set by the working day. Mornings and evenings bring dense commuter flows across the plazas and taxi ranks; the middle of the day is quieter and more touristic; and after dark the towers light up and the bus terminal keeps working long after the shops have closed.
