Mt. Yotei from Niseko

Hokkaido LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Mt. Yotei from Niseko Camera

This camera looks toward Mt. Yotei, an isolated 1,898-metre volcanic cone rising alone above the farmland around Niseko. Its symmetrical shape has earned it the nickname 'Ezo Fuji.'

Because it stands apart from other peaks, Mt. Yotei is either clearly visible or completely hidden by cloud, with little in between, making this camera a quick way to check visibility before heading out to see it in person.

Yotei is an active stratovolcano, not merely a scenic cone, and it carries a crater at the summit roughly 700 metres across. Walking up is a serious day rather than a stroll: the usual routes run five to six hours of climbing with no water on the mountain, and the season is realistically July through September. For most people this camera is the whole of the experience, which is a reasonable trade.

Highlights & Nearby

  • Watch for: the full cone of Mt. Yotei when clear, cloud building or clearing around the summit, seasonal snow cover
  • Nearby: Niseko ski resorts, Niseko town, Hirafu village
  • Note: if the peak is hidden here, it will likely stay hidden most of the day
