Sapporo Mt.moiwa At The Summit Observation Deck

Hokkaido, Japan LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Mount Moiwa Summit Observation Deck Camera

This camera sits at the summit observation deck of Mount Moiwa, 531 metres above Sapporo on the southwest edge of the city. A ropeway and a small cable car carry visitors to the top.

The view is unusually legible because of how Sapporo was built. The city was laid out on a strict grid from the 1870s, so from up here the streets run in clean parallel lines out across the Ishikari plain until they stop at the mountains. Few Japanese cities read so clearly from above — most grew organically and look it.

After dark that grid becomes a field of light, and the Sapporo night view is ranked among the best in Japan. Whether you get it is another matter: the summit sits in cloud often enough that checking before making the trip is worthwhile, and winter conditions can close the ropeway outright.

Highlights & Nearby

  • Watch for: the city grid across the plain, the night view after dark, cloud at the summit
  • Nearby: Sapporo city centre, Odori Park, Susukino, Maruyama
  • Note: the summit is often in cloud, and winter weather can suspend the ropeway
