Utsukushigahara Plateau

Nagano LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Utsukushigahara Plateau Camera

This camera sits high on Utsukushigahara, the grassland plateau above Matsumoto, looking east across the pasture. The high point nearby, Ogatou, reaches just over 2,000 metres.

What makes Utsukushigahara unusual is that it is flat. Most Japanese mountains at this height are steep and forested; here the top opens into rolling grassland grazed by cattle through the summer, which is why the plateau reads more like an upland moor than a peak.

That openness makes it an exceptional weather camera. Cloud arrives at eye level and pours across the grass, and on clear days the view runs to the Northern Alps, the Yatsugatake range and beyond. The access road closes through winter, so the cold months show an empty, snow-covered plateau with no one on it.
