Shiga Kogen Yama-no-Eki

Nagano LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Shiga Kogen Yama-no-Eki Camera

This camera looks over Yama-no-Eki in Shiga Kogen, the highland plateau above Yamanouchi in northern Nagano.

Shiga Kogen is the largest connected ski area in Japan, spread across a plateau that mostly sits between 1,300 and 2,300 metres. It hosted alpine events at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, and the altitude gives it a long season and dependable snow when lower resorts are struggling.

It is not only a winter place. The plateau lies inside Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, and the same terrain that carries ski runs in February is marsh, pond and birch forest in summer. The camera is most useful in the cold months as a direct check on snow cover and visibility before heading up.

Highlights & Nearby

  • Watch for: snow depth and cover, visibility on the plateau, summer green between seasons
  • Nearby: Yudanaka onsen, Jigokudani Monkey Park, Joshinetsu Kogen National Park
  • Note: mostly 1,300-2,300 metres — snow here is far more reliable than at lower resorts
