Shibuya Scramble Crossing Live Camera

This camera looks over the scramble crossing outside Shibuya Station in Tokyo. A scramble crossing stops every vehicle at once and releases pedestrians in all directions, diagonals included, so the intersection swings between empty roadway and a solid mass of people roughly every two minutes. That rhythm, rather than any building in the frame, is what makes the view hold attention.

The Hachiko statue stands at the station exit just out of shot; the one there now was cast in 1948, the original having been melted down for the war effort. The buildings ringing the crossing carry the large screens that give the intersection its look after dark. The skyline behind them keeps changing, since Shibuya Station has been under near-continuous redevelopment for well over a decade, with Shibuya Scramble Square and the Shibuya Sky observation deck opening in 2019.

The crossing has also become the city's default gathering point, filling on New Year's Eve, after major football results and at Halloween. Crowds grew enough that Shibuya ward acted: since 1 October 2024 an ordinance has banned street drinking around the station every night from 6pm to 5am, all year, the first year-round ban of its kind in a Japanese city centre. Late October and New Year still bring the heaviest crowds this camera sees.
