Rishiri Island, Oshidomari Port

Hokkaido LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Rishiri Island, Oshidomari Port Camera

This camera covers Oshidomari, the main port on Rishiri Island, a nearly circular volcanic island off Hokkaido's northern coast in the Sea of Japan. Ferries here connect to Wakkanai on the mainland and to neighboring Rebun Island.

The island is dominated by Mt. Rishiri, a striking 1,721-metre peak nicknamed 'Rishiri-Fuji' for its symmetrical cone, visible from the port on clear days.

The port is also where the island's two best-known exports leave from. Rishiri kombu is among the most prized kelp in Japan and underpins a good deal of high-end dashi, and the local sea urchin feeds on it, which is the reason Rishiri uni commands the prices it does. The ferry from Wakkanai takes a little over an hour and a half, and a single road of about 60 kilometres rings the whole island.
