Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo
About the Rainbow Bridge Camera
This camera watches Rainbow Bridge, the suspension bridge across the mouth of Tokyo's inner harbour between Shibaura and the Odaiba waterfront. It opened in 1993 and the main span runs about 798 metres.
The structure is double-decked, which is unusual and worth looking for. The Shuto Expressway runs on the upper level; the Yurikamome driverless train and a pedestrian walkway sit below it. On a clear frame you can pick out the Yurikamome cars crossing under the road deck.
The bridge changes character completely after dark. The towers and main cables carry lighting whose colour scheme shifts through the year, and behind them the Minato waterfront and Tokyo Tower fill in. Through the day the traffic underneath is the interest — ferries, pleasure boats and working harbour craft.
