About the Shinsaibashi-suji Camera
This camera covers Shinsaibashi-suji, the covered shopping arcade running roughly 600 metres north to south through central Osaka, from Nagahori-dori down toward Dotonbori.
The arcade is roofed along its full length, and that matters more than it sounds. Foot traffic here holds up in weather that empties open streets elsewhere in the city, so the crowd on camera is a poor guide to whether it is raining outside.
The street's commercial history goes back to the Edo-period city plan. Today it runs heavily to fashion and drugstores, with large chain stores standing beside long-established independents — a mix that is characteristic of Shinsaibashi. Foot traffic is light in the morning, builds through the afternoon and is heaviest in the evening, with people passing through toward Dotonbori mingling with those actually shopping.
