About the Meriken Park Camera
This camera covers Meriken Park on Kobe's harbour front, taking in the red lattice of Kobe Port Tower, the white space-frame roof of the Maritime Museum, the cruise berths alongside and the open water of Osaka Bay beyond. The name comes from the American consulate that once stood here, "meriken" being the old Japanese rendering of American.
The most significant thing in the park is the part nobody repaired. The Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial Park preserves about 60 metres of the original Meriken Wharf quay exactly as the Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake left it on 17 January 1995: buckled concrete, lamp posts leaning at the angle the ground threw them, the deck dropped where the fill gave way. It sits in the open at the water's edge, a few steps from the tourist frontage.
Port Tower has stood here since 1963 at 108 metres, but it closed in September 2021 for two and a half years of seismic retrofitting and only reopened on 26 April 2024, this time with the roof deck opened to visitors for the first time. Anyone comparing this camera against an older photograph of the waterfront is looking at a different tower. Evening is when the harbour lighting is strongest across the frame.
