Meishin Expressway Near Gifu-Hashima
About the Meishin Expressway Camera
This camera watches the Meishin Expressway near the Gifu-Hashima interchange, on the flat farmland of the Nobi Plain in Hashima City. Chukyo Television operates it as a traffic and news source for the Tokai region.
The Meishin was Japan's first inter-city expressway, and this stretch remains one of the country's heaviest freight corridors, carrying traffic between the Nagoya and Kansai regions. Gifu-Hashima IC is also the local access point for Gifu-Hashima Station on the Tokaido Shinkansen, a short distance away.
The open plain gives the camera a long sightline, which is why it earns its place during winter. Snow on this stretch is one of the recurring causes of expressway closures between Nagoya and Kansai, and the camera makes conditions readable at a glance.
