Kumamoto is a city of about 740,000 and the largest in the prefecture. It is known as a city of water: essentially all of its tap water comes from groundwater, which no other Japanese city of comparable size can claim. That groundwater comes from rain filtering through the volcanic soils around Mount Aso.
