Kokusai Street, Okinawa

Okinawa, Japan LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Kokusai Street Camera

This camera covers Kokusai-dori, the main street of Naha, running about 1.6 kilometres through the centre of the city. Souvenir shops, restaurants and department stores line both sides.

Its nickname is the Miracle Mile. Naha was almost entirely destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, and this street came back faster than anyone expected — the name records that recovery rather than anything about the shopping.

It functions as the centre of Naha for visitors, though locals tend to use the covered markets in the side streets off it. On Sundays a section is closed to traffic and becomes a pedestrian street. Weather here is subtropical: sudden heavy showers are common, and typhoons through summer and autumn can shut the street down entirely.
