JR Obihiro Station

Hokkaido LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the JR Obihiro Station Camera

This camera covers JR Obihiro Station, the rail hub for the Tokachi region, an agricultural plain in eastern Hokkaido known for dairy farms, potatoes and Obihiro's distinctive banei horse racing.

The station sits at the center of the city and is the departure point for buses heading out across the wide, flat Tokachi countryside.

Two things set Obihiro apart once you leave the platforms. The racecourse a short distance away runs banei keiba, the last draft-horse racing of its kind anywhere, where heavy horses drag weighted sledges up sand ramps rather than galloping a flat track. The city is also where butadon, the grilled pork rice bowl now sold across Hokkaido, originated, and the shops around the station are where most visitors first try it.

Highlights & Nearby

  • Watch for: trains and buses at the station, pedestrian activity, seasonal weather
  • Nearby: Obihiro Racecourse (Banei Keiba), Tokachi River, downtown Obihiro shopping streets
  • Note: Tokachi's clear-sky climate means conditions here can differ sharply from the coast
