About the Hanamikoji Street Camera
This camera covers Hanamikoji-dori, the street running north to south through Gion in Higashiyama ward. It is the most recognisable street in Kyoto's best-known entertainment district.
The frontages are the reason. The southern stretch is lined with wooden machiya townhouses in the ochaya style — dark timber, latticed windows, restrained signage — kept largely intact rather than reconstructed. The uniformity is unusual and it is protected: this is a designated preservation district, which governs what owners may change.
Gion is a working district, not an exhibit. Many of the buildings are private establishments operating by introduction, and pressure from visitors has been a real problem here — photography is restricted on the private lanes off Hanamikoji, with signs and penalties in place. Watching by camera avoids adding to that pressure entirely.
