About the Asahikawa City Live Camera Camera

This camera covers Asahikawa, Hokkaido's second-largest city, sitting in the Kamikawa basin roughly in the center of the island. It regularly records some of the coldest temperatures anywhere in Japan during winter.

The city is best known for Asahiyama Zoo, famous for its behavior-based exhibits, and for Asahikawa ramen, a soy-based style with a rich pork-and-seafood broth.

The cold here is a matter of record rather than reputation. On 25 January 1902 the Asahikawa weather station measured −41.0°C, still the lowest temperature ever officially recorded anywhere in Japan, and no station has come close to it since. February brings the Asahikawa Winter Festival and its large-scale snow sculptures along the Ishikari River, which is when the city makes the most of the conditions that otherwise just make daily life harder.

Highlights & Nearby

  • Watch for: downtown street conditions, seasonal weather, snowfall in winter
  • Nearby: Asahiyama Zoo, Asahikawa Station, the Kamikawa basin countryside
  • Note: the Kamikawa basin traps cold air, so temperatures here often run lower than coastal Hokkaido
