About the Akihabara District Camera
This camera covers Akihabara in Chiyoda ward, the district north of Tokyo Station best known for electronics, anime and games. Chuo-dori is the main axis, and the shops stack several storeys up the buildings on either side.
The area's character came out of the postwar years. A black market in radio parts grew up around the station, and that hardened into a genuine electronics quarter of component stalls and specialist shops. From the 1990s the mix shifted again toward anime, manga, games and hobby retail, which is what most visitors come for today — though the parts shops under the tracks are still trading.
One thing worth timing: on Sundays Chuo-dori is closed to traffic and becomes a pedestrian street. The change in how the road is used is obvious on camera, and the crowd density is noticeably different from a weekday.
